Wenakker isn't just a care center; it's a place with a rich history and a deep commitment to its residents. For over 50 years, we've been providing a loving and supportive home for adults with intellectual disabilities.
Our story began in 1969, within the walls of the former Loreto Catholic Convent. The convent itself has an even older history, dating back to 1893 when it was established by the Sisters of Loreto.
Back in 1877, Bishop Charles Jolivet recognized the need for a sanctuary in the Lydenburg area. Eventually, the convent was built on a piece of land acquired for that purpose.
The journey of the first nuns to Lydenburg was quite an adventure! They traveled all the way from Pretoria by ox-wagon, facing heavy rains and flooded rivers. It took them six whole weeks to reach their destination.
The convent served the community for many years, but as times changed, it eventually closed its doors in 1969.
That's where Wenakker comes in. In 1971, the Eastern Transvaal Society for the Care of Mentally Retarded (now known as Wenakker) purchased the property to establish a training center.
The organization was founded in 1969 by three parents who wanted to create a better future for their intellectually disabled children.
Over the years, Wenakker has grown and evolved, always staying true to its core mission of providing exceptional care and a loving community.
